The strongest accountability is chosen
The most effective type of accountability isn’t demanded. It’s chosen.
It’s not, “You have to hit this target.” It’s, “I want to achieve this because it matters.”
Research backs this up showing self-chosen or intrinsic accountability is far stronger than extrinsic or imposed accountability to drive results.
That’s because self chosen accountability taps into our identity which fuels motivation longer. Imposed accountability taps into our fears which get us going but fades over time.
Fear is a good starter. But it’s a terrible fuel source. It burns hot and fast then leaves you empty.
Identity, on the other hand, is renewable. When the work we do aligns with our values, we keep showing up. We push through the challenges and don’t give up easily. Dr Peter Fuda explains it well in this video.
When I hire someone, I look for four things:
Capability – Can they do the work?
Capacity – Can they keep doing it?
Influence – Can they bring others with them?
Desire – Do they want to do it?
If the candidate doesn’t have a passion for the challenge, the desire to contribute to the purpose behind the work, then they’re not a good fit.
You can train or coach anyone to improve their capability, capacity or influence. But you can’t motivate someone long term who doesn’t care.
Accountability imposed on people that don’t care only serves to hold everyone back.
